The Latin American Coalition offers a variety of workshops and classes to Charlotte’s diverse community members. Please look below for classes that will fit your needs.

Language Classes  

English Conversation Club

Date: Language Classes lTime: 7:00pm-8:00pm

Location: every Friday at La Coalición

Do you want to practice the English that you know? This club gives you an opportunity to practice your English-speaking skills with some advanced English speakers. A new topic is discussed every week. Intermediate English-speaking skills are recommended, but anyone that would like to attend is welcome. The club meets every Friday at 7:00pm, except for holidays. Free.

 

Job Skills  

Business Class

Date: Job Skills lTime: 7:00pm

Location: CHECK CALENDAR at La Coalición

La Coalición offers a series of Spanish-language business classes to support entrepreneurs seeking to start or expand their small business. Classes include Basic Business Practices, Introduction to Business, and Understanding FDA regulations for mobile food vendors. A book is also provided.

Job Workshop

Date: Job Skills lTime: 2:00pm-4:00pm

Location: every Tuesday at La Coalición

This job workshop is given every Tuesday at 2:00 pm and lasts up to two hours. This workshop introduces you to the job bank, types of discrimination, minimum wage, finances and budgets, fair housing, and more. It is given in Spanish. At the end of the workshop, you are given a membership card for our Job Bank. Free.

 
Labor Rights Workshop

Date: Job Skills lTime: 3:00pm

Location: every Friday at La Coalición

Learn how to recover money that someone owes you, how to avoid being a victim of discrimination, how to protect yourself from accidents at work, and what you can do when you find yourself in these situations. Come to the Labor Rights Workshop, held every Friday at 3:00pm, at the Latin American Coalition. Free.

 
Computer Literacy Classes

Location: La Coalición

Basic Computer Classes This basic computer class is designed for students who have little to no experience with computers and want to incorporate the use of computers in their daily lives. Students will learn the fundamentals of computers, such as how to use Windows, create documents using Microsoft Word, set up their own e-mail account, and navigate the Internet. Intermediate Computer Classes This intermediate computer class is for students who use the internet on a regular basis and would like to better their understanding of the different communication options available to them through the Internet. It will focus on email accounts, chat rooms and social networking sites such as FaceBook and Twitter. To register, email Sharon. Free.

 

Youth Initiatives  

United 4 the DREAM

Date: Youth Initiatives lTime: 5:30pm-7:00pm

Location: every other Friday at La Coalición

Students who want to make a difference concerning immigration issues while having fun and meeting new people are welcome! United 4 the DREAM Youth Group meets every other Friday from 5:30pm-7:00pm at the Coalition. Open to youth ages 14-19.

College Access Para Todos

Date: Youth Initiatives lTime: 4:00pm-7:30pm

Location: every Wednesday at La Coalición

Do you want to go to college? Do you need information on scholarships, or preperation help with the SAT? Would you like to participate in community service? Then join College Access Para Todos! We meet every Wednesday from 4:00-7:30 pm at the Coalition.

 

Parent Initiatives  

Connections That Count

Date: Parent Initiatives lTime: 10:00am

Location: every Friday at La Coalición

Conexiones que Cuentan - or Connections that Count - is a Spanish/Bilingual story time held every Friday at 10:00am. It is sponsored by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and is intended for Children 5 and under. Children will be exposed to theatrical activities, music, and bilingual storytelling in order to prepare them for school.

Child Care Resources

Date: Parent Initiatives lTime: 1:30 - 4:30 pm

Location: every Monday and two Thursdays a month at La Coalición

Every Monday, and the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month, a representative of Child Care Resources comes to La Coalición from 1:30pm to 4:30pm to provide information to the community about child care.

DSS

Date: Parent Initiatives lTime: 10:00am-12:00pm

Location: every second and fourth Thursday of the month at La Coalición

The Department of Social Services comes to the Coalition to answer questions and help people apply for Food Stamps and Medicaid. To ask them a question, no appointment is necessary. Simply come between 10:00am and 12:00pm to speak with the social worker. If you would like to apply for Medicaid or Food Stamps, call 704-531-3848 to make an appointment.

 

Legal Services  

Divorce Clinic

Date: Legal Services lTime: 6:00 pm

Location: CHECK CALENDAR at La Coalición

Do you want to know how to start a divorce case? An attorney from the Mecklenburg County Courthouse comes to La Coalición once a month to offer a Divorce Clinic in Spanish. This workshop is also offered in English through the Self-Serve Center of the Courthouse. To find out when the clinic occurs, check our Calendar.

Custody Clinic

Date: Legal Services lTime: 6:00 pm

Location: EXACT DATE at La Coalición

Do you want to know how to start a custody case? An attorney from the Mecklenburg County Courthouse comes to La Coalición once a month to offer a Custody Clinic in Spanish. This workshop is also offered in English through the Self-Serve Center of the Courthouse. To find out when the clinic occurs, check our Calendar.

Financial Workshops  

Taxes

Date: Financial Workshops lTime: 5:30pm

Location: by appointment every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at La Coalición

This program starts on February 7th. It is only for those whose income is less than $50,000. The volunteers who handle these taxes are certified by the IRS. The programs run on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Integration Services  

Neighbor to Neighbor

Date: Integration Services lTime: 1:00 - 4:00pm, 9:00am - 4:00pm

Location: every Monday through Thursday at La Coalición

Do you need help looking for a detainee? Would you like to know how to order a copy of a US birth or death certificate? Do you need a lawyer or medical referral? You can find these services and more in our Neighbor to Neighbor Center. Limited hours. On Monday, we are open from 1:00 - 4:00pm, and Tuesday through Thursday we are open from 9:00am - 4:00pm.
