BECOME A VOLUNTEER

Volunteers of all backgrounds come to the Latin American Coalition to make a difference in the Charlotte region. We offer more than 20 volunteer and internship positions in a variety of program areas such as advocacy, human services, information and referral, economic and workforce development, immigration, ESL education, and cultural events. Our volunteers describe their time with us as personally rewarding, highly valued and truly appreciated.

STEPS TO BECOMING A VOLUNTEER

2. Attend an Information Session: Information sessions last two hours and are held monthly. You will learn about the organization and fill out an application, indicating in which position/s you are interested.

3. Orientation Meeting: The Volunteer Services Director will meet with you, administer a volunteer handbook, acquaint you with the Coalition’s rules and set up a schedule.

4. In-Service Training:  This will be done with your direct supervisor under whom you will be working, according to your placement within the organization.

INFORMATION SESSION FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS

All volunteers must attend one of our monthly Information Session prior to starting their service. During the information session you will learn about the history of the Coalition, client demographics, programs offered, and positions currently available. You will have a chance to apply to any positions that interest you. Please bring your resume.

FAQ

How many hours a week do volunteers work? Our volunteers commit a varying number of hours per week according to their availability.

Does the Coalition offer internships? Yes, internships are available.  

Do I have to speak Spanish fluently to volunteer with the Coalition? No. Language proficiency required varies according to the position.

I work full time during the week, but would like to volunteer, are there opportunities on the weekends and evenings? Yes, we have various one-time opportunities at special events on weekends and evenings where volunteers are needed.

I need to document the hours I volunteer. Will the Coalition give me a certificate to prove I volunteered? Yes, the Latin American Coalition is happy to provide you with a certificate of completion for volunteering.

WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS DO?

Advocacy and Community Relations
  • Be a teacher’s aide in citizenship classes.
  • Register voters in the community.
Workforce Development Program
  • Publicize the Job Bank and Employment Workshops.
Internal Operations
  • Be an administrative assistant/help with clerical work and research.
  • Assist clients who visit or call the Coalition.
Cultural Celebrations
  • Help at special events such as the Latin American Festival, Cinco de Mayo, Cultural Tertulias, and the Day of the Dead.
Immigration Program
  • Be an Immigrant Rights and Community Educator.
Education Programs
  • Teach ESL classes.
  • Be a Spanish instructor.
